Follow these tips to save energy this summer!

Temperatures have been pushing the 40 degrees mark in many parts of the country this summer, and are expected to continue soaring. To counter the heat, we tend to keep our fans, coolers and ACs on most of the time, leading to increased energy consumption and soaring electricity bills. While it may not be possible to do away with these electronic comforts, here are some tips that you can follow to save up on energy costs, and keep cool this summer:

Service your air conditioner and clean AC filters regularly: If the AC ducts are clogged and dirty, your AC will have to work harder to keep up the cooling, thereby consuming more energy. Hence, by cleaning your AC filters regularly, or as per the manufacturers guidelines, the AC will work more efficiently.  You can  also save energy by setting the temperature at 24-26 degrees, thus saving up energy on every 1 degree of cooling that you do without.  You can use a fan in conjunction with the AC, as that will help circulate cool air, so you won’t need to lower your AC’s temperature much.

Keep doors and windows open for air circulation: Maximise the amount of fresh air being circulated in your room by keeping the doors and windows open, in the morning and late evenings. This way, you can avoid switching on the AC for the entire day, and thus conserve energy.

Upgrade to a newer, more energy efficient AC:  The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has a star-rating programme which rates all electric appliances on the basis of their energy efficiency - the higher the rating, the more energy efficient it is. Hence, you can help conserve energy by opting for an AC, fridge or washing machine with a five star energy efficiency rating. Energy efficient ACs provide much better cooling than the standard ones, and consume less energy.  Also ensure that doors/windows are closed properly while operating the AC, to avoid the cool air from escaping.

Unplug electric appliances when not in use: By keeping your laptop or mobile chargers plugged in when you are not using them, you are wasting electricity.  So turn off and unplug all electrical appliances when not in use. Electronic appliances also generate heat, when plugged in, thus by unplugging them, you will also be able to reduce the heat generated.

Keep blinds or curtains closed during noon time: By keeping blinds and curtains closed when the sun’s intensity is at its peak, you can keep the room cooler. Your AC will, thus, need that much less energy to cool the room down.

Install energy efficient lights, and maximise use of day light: Summer is when you have the most amount of natural light coming into the house, so maximise the use of day light, by keeping binds open in the morning. Another good idea would be to switch over to energy efficient LED lights, and Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL), which are four times more energy efficient than the regular incandescent lamps.

Avoid peak energy hours of 10 AM – 8 PM: As much as possible, use heavy household appliances such as washing machines, geysers, irons, etc before or after the peak energy hours of 10 AM – 8 PM. By doing so, you can avoid adding on to the peak hour energy demand.

Switch off lights and fans when not in use: And conserve energy by using electric chokes and regulators.

Leave space between refrigerator and the wall: By doing so, air can circulate freely around the fridge. Also ensure that you do not keep the fridge doors open for long, and that the door is sealed properly at night.

Cook with the lid closed: Thaw vegetables and other food items taken out of the refrigerator, and bring it to room temperature before cooking. This makes the heating and cooking process faster, thereby saving up on fuel.

Juventus celebrates Serie A title with 2-0 win over Carpi!

MILAN (AP) — Juventus celebrated another Serie A title with a 2-0 victory over Carpi in a party atmosphere in Turin on Sunday.

Juventus had already clinched its fifth successive title before kicking a ball after Napoli lost 1-0 at Roma on Monday.

There was no sign of a celebration hangover as Hernanes scored his first goal for the club before substitute Simone Zaza wrapped up the points late on.

"It was the most difficult match because we came into it after a week of celebration and a few days holiday," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "We mustn't forget that we still have the Italian Cup final and we mustn't take our foot off the gas because then it's difficult to get going again."

Carpi remained outside the relegation zone but is now above 18th-placed Palermo only on goal difference after the Sicilian side beat Sampdoria 2-0.

Frosinone are four points behind in 19th after wasting a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw at AC Milan.
Jeremey Menez netted a stoppage-time penalty for Milan. Mario Balotelli, who had an earlier penalty saved, also hit the bar with the last kick of the match.

"It's not right to say that we are disunited and that we gave them too much space," Milan coach Cristian Brocchi said. "Conceding three goals at home to Frosinone is not the Milan way ... Despite everything I also saw some positive things today."

Milan has fallen to seventh spot, a point below Sassuolo, which beat Hellas Verona 1-0 to leapfrog above the Rossoneri into the final Europa League qualifying berth.

There are two rounds remaining.

Empoli drew 0-0 against Bologna. Inter Milan visits Lazio later.

Despite having clinched the title, there was no sign of Juventus easing up as it secured its 25th victory in 26 matches. It has not conceded a goal at home in 2016.

Hernanes broke the deadlock three minutes from halftime with a low shot from outside the area that squeezed in between Carpi goalkeeper Vid Belec and the right post.

Zaza doubled Juve's lead with 10 minutes remaining, sending a powerful header from Paul Pogba's cross into the far side of the net.

With Carpi having played earlier, Frosinone knew a win would move it to within a point of safety and it got off to the perfect start as Luca Paganini gave it the lead in the second minute.

Alex almost leveled but saw his header edged onto the crossbar before Oliver Kragl doubled Frosinone's lead with a 30-yard free kick on the stroke of halftime.

Milan should have got back into the match straight after the break but Frosinone stand-in goalkeeper Francesco Bardi saved Balotelli's penalty following Adriano Russo's handball.

Carlos Bacca did score for Milan minutes later after a mistake from Bardi, who allowed a cross to squirm between him and the near post for the Colombia forward to tap into an empty net.

Federico Dionisi restored Frosinone's two-goal advantage almost immediately before Keisuke Honda had a goal ruled out for Milan in a frantic first 15 minutes of the second half.

Milan did reduce the deficit again in the 74th minute as substitute Luca Antonelli scored a stunning goal moments after coming on, chesting down the ball with his back to goal and firing it in with an overhead kick.

Milan was awarded another penalty in stoppage time following Vasyl Pryima's handball. Menez stepped up and Bardi came close to also saving his spot kick but it went into the bottom left corner.

How Beer Could Help You Lose Weight, According To Science!

Beer is widely seen as incredibly fattening - so much so that we’ve named wobbly tummies, ‘Beer bellies’.

But beer might not be quite as bad as we all imagine.

Researchers have found that a compound in beer - a natural flavonoid, xanthohumol, found in hops - actually helps with weight loss.

Oregon State University researchers fed laboratory mice a high-fat diet - and a high dose of xanthohumol.

The mice fed xanthohumol gained 22% less weight than the others - even though they ate the same amount.

Intake of xanthohumol appears to increase their oxygen consumption and metabolic rate, which could mean it could help with weight loss.

Sadly, the levels in beer are very low - you’d have to drink 3,500 pints a day to have the same effect - but the chemical could be used in a tablet.

‘This is the first time we’ve seen one compound with the potential to address so many health problems,’ said Cristobal Miranda of Oregon State University.

‘These were very dramatic improvements.’

The win put the Catalan club back in first place after both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid had won earlier.

Lionel Messi set up both Barcelona goals at the Benito Villamarin Stadium in Seville.

Real Betis played a man down from the 37th after Heiko Westermann was sent off with consecutive yellow cards.

Victories in the derby against Espanyol and at Granada in the final two rounds will secure Barcelona its second consecutive title.
